Why smoothies are more sustainable

Written By Unknown on Tuesday 30 January 2018 | 19:02

We love starting our day with a good ol’ green smoothie – it’s seriously the easiest way to cram a bunch of green veggies into one drink – but, that’s not the only reason why we love smoothies…

Nutritionally, smoothies are much better for you.

While juicing is extremely popular (and considered healthy), it’s a flawed method of consuming fruit and veggies. From a nutritional perspective, a juice is nowhere near as beneficial for you as a smoothie. When fruit and veggies are juiced, all of the fibre is left behind and you’re basically left consuming the sugar. You wouldn’t eat four apples in one sitting, but you could easily drink the juice of them. In comparison, smoothies retain all of the fibre, making them much more satisfying.

And, smoothies are also much better for the environment!

Smoothies are way more eco-friendly, as no pulp is wasted! When you juice a load of veg and fruit, what do you do with all that unavoidable pulp? Our guess is that it gets tossed in the bin – which is then transferred into landfill. While there are no doubt some interesting ways to use your juice pulp, how often do people actually get around to doing it?

With a smoothie, the fruit and veg goes straight from the fridge, into your blender and then into your gob! There is little to no waste when whipping up a smoothie, which makes them perfect for using up any leftover fruit and veg in your fridge.

Plus, they’re super versatile.

Juicers can only take you so far, as there are heaps of foods that you can’t juice, but you can add to a smoothie (avocado, anyone?) so, the possibilities for smoothies are never-ending. As far as bases go, you can use dairy milk, nut milk, water or coconut water for your smoothie. On top of that, you can add a myriad of fruits and veggies, along with nuts, nut butter and cacao powder.
