5 cooking shortcuts to spend less time in the kitchen

Written By Unknown on Thursday 30 March 2017 | 00:04

Getting home from a long day at work, we know how tempting it is to just put on a pot of two-minute noodles or order takeaway.

Sometimes, cooking homemade, healthy meals can be such a chore! Well, that is, if you’re spending more time in the kitchen than you need.

Still sifting flour and staying away from the microwave? You might be surprised how much time you’ll save these simple cooking shortcuts.

1. Make it a one-pot wonder.

Half the hassle of cooking is the cleaning up. Check our our one-pot wonder recipes (stews, soups and bakes are your best bet).

Also, life hack: you can cook pasta in its own sauce. Mind blown.

2. Utilise your slow cooker.

If you don’t have a slow cooker (or worse, have one but don’t use it), you need to re-evaluate your kitchen.

You can make the most delicious, hearty dinners simply by chucking some meat and veg in slow cooker and letting it do its thang while you’re at work.

3. Don’t be afraid of the microwave.

Contrary to popular belief, microwaves don’t kill nutrients more than any other cooking method (in fact, sometimes they even help retain more nutrients).

Use it for defrosting and heating food quickly, or even try making a mug cake or crispy bacon in there.

4. Do a Sunday Cook-Up.

A little meal prep on the weekends goes a long way. On the I Quit Sugar: 8-Week Program, we batch and freeze things that take a while to cook, like quinoa, activated beans and breakfast muffins.

5. Don’t sift flour.

Back in ye olde days, flour had all kinds of things in it that needed to be sifted – husks, grass, the odd bug.

Now, commercial flour is so refined that you don’t need to sift it, unless you’re making a very delicate dessert.

What cooking shortcuts help you spend less time in the kitchen?
