As childhood obesity rates continue to rise, Jamie Oliver compares obesity to terrorism

Written By Unknown on Thursday 3 November 2016 | 22:30

  • An NHS report has revealed alarming obesity rates in UK children as young as four or five, with 10 per cent of kids obese by the time they reach school.
  • The report comes hot on the heels of renewed cries for the Theresa May Government to improve its new Childhood Obesity Plan, which is even weaker than the previous Government’s attempt.
  • Jamie Oliver attacked the Prime Minister for the new plan, comparing the threat of obesity in the UK to that of terrorism.

Debate around the UK obesity epidemic has reached boiling point.

This week, new NHS report revealed that childhood obesity numbers are once again on the rise across the country. It also showed a stark class divide in childhood obesity rates, with the numbers up more significantly in lower socioeconomic areas.

The report comes just after the new UK Government released its revised Childhood Obesity Plan, which sees many of the David Cameron Government’s initiatives cut. Basically, it’s gone from bad to worse.

Appearing on UK current affairs program Dispatches earlier this week, Jamie Oliver attacked the Government for failing to put the health of the next generation first, saying the UK obesity epidemic poses a greater threat to Brits than terrorism.

Hyperbole aside, we agree with Jamie and other commentators that MUCH more must be done to tackle the effects of this serious health epidemic in Britain.

Will these new report figures be enough to kick the UK Government into action to establish a plan we can really get behind?
