UK Government’s ultimatum: Cut sugar OR portion sizes by 20%

Written By Unknown on Thursday, 30 March 2017 | 00:04

  • The UK Government has published new guidelines for the food industry to reduce sugar by 20 per cent by 2020.
  • The industry is advised to reformulate or reduce portion sizes.
  • This could cut 200,000 tons of sugar from products each year!

Public Health England has advised the food industry to cut sugar OR portion sizes to meet the 20 per cent sugar reduction goal by 2020.

Companies should also make the effort to direct consumers to low- or no-sugar products, its new report says.

If companies comply, it could cut 200,000 tons of sugar from products each year. With nearly a third of UK children overweight or obese, we can’t underestimate that kind of impact.

The only catch? We wish the guidelines were the law.

Huge companies like Pepsi, Kellogg’s and Waitrose have already pledged significant reductions. But the widely promoted new KitKat (with its grand total reduction of 0.7g sugar) just seems tokenistic. Come on NestlĂ©, surely even you can do better?!

Do you think changing the ingredients and size of sugary foods will make a difference?
