Easy allergy-free baking swaps

Nobody should have to miss out on cake. Ever.

So, if you’re struggling to find treats that your little one can enjoy due to allergies, look no further.

We’ve rounded up some of the easiest swaps for the most common allergies, so you can have your cake (and eat it too!).

Nuts.

Nuts are one of the most common allergies. In fact, nearly one in three people are allergic to peanuts alone! So, whether you’re baking for your child, or for the nut-free school bake sale, these swaps will go down a treat.

  • If the recipe calls for nut butter (peanut, almond etc.), try swapping it for tahini (sesame seed paste), coconut butter, or even sunflower seed butter!
  • Instead of chopped nuts, try adding seeds or chopped 90% Lindt dark chocolate. When in doubt, add a little choccy right?!

Eggs.

Eggs help to give moisture to the batter and bind everything together, but they can prove hard to replace.

  • Try mashing half a banana and mixing that into sweet recipes – you will get a slight banana taste to your treats!
  • Or, mix 1 tablespoon of chia seeds with a little water and waiting until it makes a goopy paste, then stir it into your batter. This option is high in fibre and has no flavour, so the kids won’t notice.

These swaps are best for recipes that need binding but don’t need to rise.

Dairy.

We’re lucky to have so many dairy-free options available that can be substituted into recipes with a 1:1 ratio.

  • Coconut milk or almond milk are our milk substitutes of choice, just make sure they’re the sugar-free kind!
  • Coconut yoghurt is great to replace yoghurt in recipes or to dollop on top of your creations. Check out what we thought of these popular coyos – there’s even a chocolate one!

Wheat.

We love to use almond meal in our baking as it gives a light and fluffy texture, and because it’s just ground almonds, you can make it yourself. Just pop almonds in the blender and blitz away.

This Fluffy Carrot Mousse uses almond meal to get its fluffy texture and it’s the perfect side for dinner, or even as a quick ‘n’ easy snack!
