Could Jojoba oil be the key to better skin?

Written By Unknown on Saturday 26 August 2017 | 18:01

If you’ve been listening closely to the world of wellness recently, it’s more than likely you’ve heard the buzz surrounding oil cleansers.

As someone who has battled with adult acne, I initially found this particular trend baffling. If my skin was acne prone and already oily – how could adding oil to the mix possibly help the problem?

Enter, Jojoba oil… a liquid wax extracted from the nut of a shrub native to the South Western states of America.

The reason this oil has such a miraculous cleansing and nurturing effect on one’s skin is due to its strong resemblance to our bodies sebum (a waxy substance produced by our skin glands). It also mirrors our skin’s natural PH level, therefore complementing the oil our skin naturally produces. Rather than stripping it back and fighting that production, it works with the skin’s sebum.

If we continually wash our body’s sebum off the skin, it has to fight hard to keep producing it. Excess sebum can be the cause of blocked pores and acne breakouts so rather than triggering its production, Jojoba oil compliments it. Clever huh?

Switching out my extensive skin care regime to one that consisted of using only Jojoba oil bought about one of the most significant changes I saw on my path to clear skin. And the reason? I was interfering less with my skin’s natural state by only washing and moisturizing with one product. When it comes to handling your skin – less is definitely more!

So, how do I use it?

Jojoba oil can be used just like any normal cleanser, simply take a small amount in your hands and rub gently over your face. Another magic trick is that it also removes makeup! Simply use a warm face cloth to gently steam your face for around thirty seconds (run your face cloth under hot water and lay on your face), then remove the oil from your face using water and your face cloth. Pat dry and then add a little extra oil as moisturiser. If you feel this is too heavy for the day, simply skip the moisturiser in the morning and just use before bed – I like to do both.

Jojoba oil is antibacterial, but getting used to the feeling of cleansing without the foamy consistency of mainstream face cleansers can be a little strange at first. But, if you feel like you’ve  tried almost every acne-clearing trick in the book, perhaps it’s time to re-evaluate your skin care regime.

While you can’t expect results overnight, using Jojoba oil in combination with a healthy diet, good hydration and plenty of sleep should see your skin shift significantly. Always choose organic and remember, when it comes to your skincare – less is more, always.
