5 easy food swaps to help you stay healthy this holidays

“‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a vegetable was in sight, not even a Brussels sprout.”

Does this sound like your idea of festivity? While it’s perfectly normal to treat yourself during the silly season, it’s important to be mindful that you don’t go too cray-cray. We’ve rounded up some easy tips to help you have a healthy holidays (and we promise you won’t look like a killjoy!).

We’ve rounded up some easy food swaps to help you have a healthy holidays (and we promise you won’t look like a killjoy!).

1. Choose your party drinks wisely.

In the battle of the bubbles, wine wins over Champagne (and red wine has lower fructose levels than white).

Straight spirits like gin are also better than sugary cocktails, as long as you mix them with soda water or sugar-free tonic.

It’s also a good idea to to swap every second glass for something non-alcoholic. Water with a wedge of lime, slice of cucumber or fresh mint is a great option.

2. Leave the cookies to Mr Claus.

Those bulk Christmas tins of shortbread are usually poor quality anyway. A handful of nuts provides a nicely wrapped gift of fibre, vitamins and good fats.

Or, make a cheese platter, complete with homemade hummus or guacamole dip and crunchy crudites to fill you up. We don’t think the reindeer will mind if you steal a few of their carrots.

3. Load up on roast vegetables.

Forget the glazed ham. The roast vegetables are the best part of any Christmas dinner!

Pile up your plate with potatoes, kumara, carrots, beetroot, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and more (with a splash of homemade free gravy or cheese sauce).

4. Keep your cool on summer treats.

An Aussie Christmas may be lighter on steamed puddings, but that doesn’t mean we’re out of the woods. If someone’s packed a pavlova, for example, stick to a small slice and opt for some of the low-fructose fruits, like strawberries, blueberries and kiwi fruit, on top.

Another great swap? While it might be tempting to follow Mr Whippy’s siren call, we think a few spoonfuls of creamy, coconut yoghurt stashed in your esky should hit your sweet spot.

5. BYO dessert.

You won’t be able to avoid every sugar-filled party (and why would you want to?!).

Instead, take responsibility for dessert and bring your own low-sugar substitutes that everyone can enjoy. We reckon this festive Berry Swirl Cheesecake, is much better than any trifle, anyway.
