Is your perfume messing with your hormones?

Written By Unknown on Wednesday, 18 May 2016 | 21:06

Is perfume a regular part of your beauty routine? Here’s why it may be time to take five on your daily spritz of Chanel No. 5.

The problem with perfume.

A growing number of people are developing chemical sensitivities to strong scents, and one of the worst offenders is right under your nose.

Common symptoms of chemical sensitivity include burning eyes, breathlessness or throbbing headache. However, regularly spraying synthetic perfumes could have even more serious health complications.

The hormone connection.

Many synthetic products (including perfumes) have been associated with hormone disruption.

According to I Quit Sugar expert and naturopath Lara Briden, “Many personal care products, including fragrances, contain a toxin called phthalates which can be a problem for the thyroid gland.

“One recent study found that the more phthalates people have in their bodies, the less thyroid hormone they make. Insufficient thyroid hormone causes symptoms such as fatigue and hair loss.”

The I Quit Sugar no-perfume policy.

Sarah has been vocal about her need to “self-protect” against fragrances.

“My chemical intolerance is triggered most aggressively by perfume,” she says. “And when I’m in contact with perfume I get inflamed. I’m left foggy-headed, aching in my joints. My feet and hands swell and I feel nauseous.”

With several staff members at IQS-headquarters suffering similar reactions, we made a team decision to implement a policy banning perfume in the office. The result: less sneezing, coughing and sinus problems for all, and fewer thyroid flare ups in those affected.

So are we a smelly bunch?

No way. We use natural eco products or make our own fragrance by mixing a small amount of essential oil with a base oil like sweet almond and rubbing it on our wrists.

So the strongest scent you’ll ever smell around here is something delicious coming out of the test kitchen!
