Thinking about quitting sugar? Fruit, chocolate and wine are still on the table!

Written By Unknown on Monday 19 February 2018 | 10:01

We’re not keen on deprivation, militant discipline or calorie counting…

That’s because food is more than just mere energy for the body – it’s also social glue! In other words, food brings people together. We’re here to remind you that quitting sugar in favour of wholesome, natural food isn’t about cutting back, it’s about inviting in – inviting in more of the good stuff! So, in the name of all that is delicious, here’s a list of things you can still enjoy while living the sugar-free life. You might just be surprised!

Fruit…

We don’t fear fruit, nor do we shun it – we’re just wise about how we eat it! While we do cut it out for four weeks over the course of our 8-Week Program, this is just so your taste buds can reset. You’d be surprised at just how sweet fruit really tastes when you reduce your sugar intake! We enjoy around 1–2 pieces of whole fruit a day.

Wine and beer…

Certain types of wine – particularly dry reds and whites – contain very little fructose. The fructose in the grapes is what ferments to become alcohol, which means that there’s very little residual sugar in the finished product. But before you throw down a glass of dessert wine, listen up! Not all wines are created equal and there are a few that we avoid. If you’re not a wine drinker, you can still enjoy a tipple. Beer is a-okay, and spirits also get a tick, as long as they’re not mixed with soft drinks or syrups.

Cheese…

Is there anything better? We’re nuts for it at IQS. In fact, we think it’s un-brie-lievable. That’s exactly why we’ll never ask you to palm off the Parmesan for some low-fat, low-calorie frankenfood. Full-fat is where it’s at. And we don’t count calories. Instead, we aim for nutrient-dense meals that are full of veggies, protein and healthy fats.

Bread….

We don’t expect you to ditch dairy, so we’re not gonna ask you to quit bread or gluten either. We do, however, ask that you’re mindful of the kind of bread you buy. Because, well, you’re worth more than Wonder White! We’re big fans of authentic sourdough bread and sprouted loaves, as well as wholemeal breads made with spelt and rye. Be wary of gluten-free breads loaded with “food-like” ingredients and be sure to opt for whole grain options made with gluten-free grains like buckwheat or quinoa.

Granola…

We’re not quite sure how store-bought granola earned itself the “healthy food” label. It might have something to do with that moreish combo of whole grains and nuts… which is then liberally doused in syrups, honey and dried fruit! We’re not buying it (literally). And why would we, when we’ve created one of the most delicious, sugar-free granola recipes on the planet? (Dare we say, the entire universe).

Chocolate…

As this post is being written, there is no doubt someone in the IQS office munching on some 85% dark chocolate. That’s because cacao is pretty much a superfood in our opinion! We love a square or two of dark choccie after lunch to keep those cravings in check. As always, mindful consumption is key. And on a side note, white chocolate is not chocolate in our opinion – it’s candy!

Dessert…

While we don’t recommend eating sweet treats every day, we’re certainly partial to an IQS-friendly dessert every now and then! (Ever glimpsed our cheesecake recipes!?). When you quit sugar, you don’t have to miss out when your birthday rolls around. Hip hip, hooray!

Food in general…

Yep, there are some diets out there that would have you quitting food altogether! Does ‘lemon detox’ sound familiar? Well, we’re having none of it! At IQS, we love food and feel incredibly privileged to have access to such an abundance of it every day. For this reason, we won’t be taking the joy out of your food anytime soon. So keep calm, you can have your cake and eat it too.
