3 school-friendly substitutes for nut butter

Written By Unknown on Monday 19 February 2018 | 14:01

Nut butter is super versatile, which makes replacing it for school lunches a little tricky…

But, we’ve found some school-friendly spreads you can use in place of peanut butter and they’re all pretty delicious so rest assured your little ones will gobble them up!

1. Sunflower seed butter.

The spread made from ground sunflower seeds is the closest you’re going to get to the real deal. The look and mouthfeel of sunflower seed butter is the same as peanut butter and it spreads just as easily. Plus, it tastes pretty nutty as well. You can use sunflower seed butter in any way you would nut butter –  spread thickly on sandwiches or smeared on an apple, it’s pretty versatile.

2. Tahini + hummus.

Your little ones might not love the taste of tahini at first, but trust us, they’ll get used to it! And, tahini is great as a nut butter replacement in bliss balls and other baked goods. Another great option is hummus – which contains a fair whack of tahini. Hummus is completely nut-free and can be sent to school with a bunch of chopped up veggies for dipping.

3. Coconut butter.

This thick coconutty spread is best enjoyed on toast or sandwiches. Otherwise, it can easily be used in baked goods in lieu of nut butter. Whip up this heavenly Coconut Chocolate Butter – but ditch the optional hazelnut meal – and send it to school with your kids with strawberries for dunking. Yum!
