Ingredients you never knew you could pop in a smoothie!

Smoothies are one of the most versatile brekkie options.

They’re a great vehicle for veggies, fruit, healthy fats and protein – what more could you want? But, think beyond your usual additions of spinach, avo and berries.

Next time you’re whipping up a toteable brekkie, try adding in these quirky ingredients…

1. Zucchini.

Adding zucchini to smoothies has become more popular lately, but our founder and director, Sarah, has been doing it for years. If you haven’t tried it, please do! Simply keep some chopped zucchini in your freezer and pop it in your next smoothie creation. It’ll make it extra creamy! If you don’t believe us, try our Zucchini Bread Thickie.

2. Lavender.

Lavender is known as the calming herb, but what if we told you that you could add it to your brekkie smoothie? Not only does lavender turn your smoothie a pretty purple colour, but it can help to soothe your nervous system too. Lavender is also filled with considerable amounts of vitamin A, calcium and iron. Win, win!

3. Beetroot.

Beetroot has long been popular in juices, but you can also add this veggie to your smoothies. In fact, adding the whole beet to your smoothie is a much more nutrient-dense option , as blending leaves the fibre intact. Along with stacks of fibre, beetroot is packed with folate, manganese, potassium, iron and vitamin C.  If you have a high-powered blender, feel free to pop your chopped up beet in raw. Otherwise, bake or lightly steam your beets before putting them in your smoothie. Give our Hide The Greens Smoothie a go and you’ll never look back.

4. Aloe Vera.

You’ve probably used aloe vera to soothe irritated skin, but have you ever tried it in your smoothie? If not, This plant is a great addition as it’s virtually tasteless while packing a nutritional punch. Aloe vera contains vitamins B, C, E and folic acid and it’s great for liver health. It’s also extremely hydrating and can help with constipation.

5. Sweet potato or pumpkin puree.

This combo isn’t just for dinner (or for baking brownies!), it can also be used in smoothies. These root veggies are a great replacement to fruit as they add a natural sweetness. Sweet potato and pumpkin are both nutrient-dense veggies and contain bundles of fibre, potassium and manganese. Try our Gingerbread Smoothie to experience this tasty combination!
