Found yourself in the midst of an avo shortage? Don’t panic!

First came the great NZ avocado shortage of 2016 that lead to avo thieves, and then just a few months ago, our Kiwi mates were hit again by disaster…

Avocados had risen to a whopping $7.50 each! *Gasp!*

Everyone was shaken – even Subway had to say goodbye to this beloved creamy spread – and as we gathered at our local cafe to spend waaay too much on our own avo toast, we shed a little tear for those across the ditch.

But, never fear! If you find yourself in a similar situation (strap yourself in) and reach for one of these tasty alternatives…

For a spread, use hummus.

Sometimes your sandwich just isn’t the same without that creamy layer. Before you reach for a vege oil-packed mayo though, try spreading on some hummus instead. Not only will it give you that same smooth texture, but chickpeas are packed with bone-boosting nutrients like iron, calcium and magnesium. Want a bigger flavour hit? Glad you asked, because our sweet Pumpkin Hummus will do the trick.

For some healthy fats, try chia seeds.

If a dollop of healthy fats is what you’re after, sprinkle a handful of chia seeds over your dish. These powerful little beauties are not only a great energy source, but they’re packed with protein and they contain 65 per cent omega 3 healthy fats. Is there anything this seed can’t do? We don’t think so… sub out your avo on toast with our delish Raspberry Chia Jam.

For guacamole, try peas.

No, we’re not joking! Simply blitz your peas in a food processor and add your fave guac accompaniments – tomato and coriander are our go-tos – and voila! It has the same creamy texture plus, and it’s even delish on a corn chip. Pea-amole all round!
