Surprising things PACKED with sugar

Written By Unknown on Wednesday, 26 July 2017 | 18:03

So, you call yourself sugar-free because you cleared out your secret stash of chocolate and lollies. Right?

Ah, not quite so right. The sweet stuff is hiding in a bunch of sneaky places that you wouldn’t even think to look.

Chai tea.

We’re not talking about chai in a tea bag that you brew yourself, but instead, the brew you pick up from your local café. What you probably didn’t know is that café chai tea and chai lattes are brewed and then topped up with a load of sugar – some even have more sugar than a snickers bar! If you’re reaching for a tea, try herbal instead.

Iced coffee.

Similar to chai, your iced coffee is often a secret sugar bomb with ice cream, cream, sauce and the white stuff itself tucked away inside. If you’re really after an iced coffee, an iced Americano with a dash of milk is the way to go.

Sweetened almond milk.

The name even says it…yes, sweetened almond milk is packed with sugar. Almond Breeze has a whopping five teaspoons of sugar per serve! If you’re after a dairy-free alternative try the unsweetened varieties, or make your own to stay clear of the sweet stuff.

Veggie chips.

Brace yourself because this one shocked us too! When you reach for veggie chips you might think you’re choosing the healthy option, but some varieties are heavily seasoned with – you guessed it, sugar. Some of the worst offenders are Tyrrells veg crisps which are more than 23 per cent sugar and for those of you in the UK, Scrubbys chips have more than seven teaspoons per 100 gram packet! To check if your chips of choice make the sugar-free cut, flip the packet over and have a read of the nutritional info.

Canned soup.

This week we shared the news that Heinz’s toddler food, “Little Kids Shredz” is packed with sugar, but it seems, so is some of their soup! The classic Cream of Tomato has nearly 10 grams of sugar per serve due to the tomato concentrate and added sugar. We think we’ll make our own with extra veg, thanks!
