Why “detoxing” isn’t what you think

Written By Unknown on Thursday 29 June 2017 | 18:01

It’s hard not to be sucked into all the detox diets being spruiked by celebs these days.

Wherever we look there seems to be a new craze – juice cleanses, fasting, tea bags, pills, shakes, gels…

So before you run out to buy the latest barbaric cleanse, hear us out!

The word “detox” simply means to rid the body of toxins or unhealthy substances and, guess what? Your body does this all on its own. All day, every day.

Let’s take a look at your personalised (and free) detox system…

Liver.

The liver might be the hardest working organ in the whole body because it’s responsible for detoxing everything that passes your lips. That’s right, everything you eat or drink is processed through your liver, and it has to decide what can be used as nutrients, and what toxins should be flushed out.

Kidneys.

These beauties are busy 24/7 working as your own personal blood cleaning and waste disposal system. Your kidneys clean around 200 litres of blood a day and the waste is then flushed out as urine. Clever, huh?

Skin.

We don’t sweat, we glow! Skin is the largest organ in the body, making up around 16 per cent of your weight, and it has a pretty important job to do. Not only is it your first line of defence against germs, but any toxins that do get into your system are then excreted through your skin as sweat.

Lungs.

Your lungs (and the entire respiratory system) first and foremost allow you to breathe, but they also filter out any toxic gases from travelling further into your body. When you breathe in, oxygen is carried to your cells and is exchanged for any waste gas, which you then breathe out as carbon dioxide. What a breath of fresh air!
