Let’s talk about sex. Seriously.
When it comes down to it, sex takes more than just physical chemistry to make it happen. Sex requires energy and nutrition plays a key role.
So, if your love life is feeling a little lacklustre, it might be time to reassess your eating habits. When your hormones aren’t functioning properly, chances are your sleep, cholesterol, mood and sadly, your libido, will be out of whack.
Here’s how to get things back on track…
Eat the rainbow.
When you consume colourful fruits and vegetables, you’re taking in an array of essential nutrients that your body thrives on. Different coloured foods also provide different qualities so it’s always best to include as much variety as possible!
Red and oranges are high in vitamin C while blues and purples are rich in antioxidants and greens provide your body with iron. Processed foods, on the other hand, are nutrient-deficient and over time, this can result in poor sexual function.
Spice it up. Literally.
Shift your focus to foods that increase blood flow. When you eat spicy foods you may notice that you literally heat up! This is due to capsaicin, a natural chemical that dilates blood vessels and increases blood flow to all parts of the body. It triggers endorphins and in turn, amps up sensations in the body.
Spicy food also stimulates the nervous system activating feelings of arousal more easily. The result? Spicy food may lead to spicy sex!
Choose your brekkie-in-bed wisely.
Ditch heavy, sugary breakfast options in favour of oats. The humble bowl of oatmeal is up there with one of the most trendy brekkie bowls – and for good reason!
Oats are high in zinc and can increase testosterone levels (in both men and women), which in turn, can boost sexual desire. They also release energy slowly (as opposed to all at once), giving you increased stamina…just saying.
Healthy fats for the win.
As we’ve already mentioned, unhealthy processed fats and junk foods can wreak havoc on your libido. Good fats however, are vital for the production of sex hormones. Why? Because good fats (like those found in olive oil) and good cholesterol are metabolised in the liver, stimulating the production of oestrogen and testosterone.
Embrace cacao.
This is an oldie but a goodie! Add cacao to smoothies and sugar-free desserts as it will not only taste delicious, but cacao also contains the amino acid phenylalanine which works to increase endorphins and boost dopamine – AKA the brain chemical that surges during sex.
It also boasts high levels of magnesium which soothes the nervous system and relaxes muscles. Win, win!
