5 healthy comfort food recipes to enjoy curled up on the couch

Written By Unknown on Tuesday 6 June 2017 | 22:22

When the weather dips down below 20 degrees in Australia, you know winter is coming. Cue Game of Thrones theme music…

While we’re sad to say goodbye to balmy beach days, there’s something (almost) as enticing just around the corner. That’s right – winter comfort food!

And it doesn’t have to be unhealthy either. With these nutritious soups, stews and curries, you can curl up under a blanket with your GoT box set and feel good about it, too.

1. Zia Lucy’s Lenticchia.

Our food and recipes manager Georgia discovered this Sicilian lentil soup recipe at the home of her family friend “Zia Lucy” (Aunty in Italian). After first spoonful we were HOOKED. It had to be featured in our new book, I Quit Sugar: The Soups Cookbook. You’ll definitely want a second bowl.

2. Chicken Tikka Masala.

Possibly Australia’s favourite curry, you can’t go wrong with a big bowl of chicken tikka and rice. Loaded with chilli, cumin, turmeric, ginger and paprika, it literally warms you from within. If you prefer, swap the chicken with fish, chickpeas or paneer.

3. Better than Mum’s Shepherd’s Pie.

It might be a big call to say this pie is better than your mum’s… but we’re calling it. This recipe has it all – a rich bolognese sauce, hidden vegetables and a crispy, buttery mashed potato topping. It’s like the food equivalent of a hug.

4. Coconut Curry Pumpkin Soup.

Another soup recipe because we can’t get enough! This is one of the best soups we’ve ever tasted, combining the richness of pumpkin with the creaminess of coconut. Remember to roast the pumpkin first for amazing, silky sweetness. YUM.

5. Hungarian Goulash.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a dish more hearty than Sarah’s Hungarian goulash (meat and veg stew). The beauty of it is that it cooks for eight hours in the slow cooker, meaning you’ll have tender, falling-off-the-bone beef waiting for you the minute you get home from work. That’s what we call relaxing!
