The Danish secret to happiness we can’t stop talking about (or pronounce!)

Written By Unknown on Wednesday 8 February 2017 | 21:05

Have you heard of hygge? It’s the latest wellness trend doing the rounds on the interwebs (and at IQS HQ).

Pronounced “hoo-gah” (we think, although there’s plenty of versions doing the rounds), hygge has been dubbed “the Danish secret to happiness”.

And considering Danes are apparently the happiest people in the world, we reckon that’s nothing to sneeze at!

How to hygge.

There’s no direct English translation for hygge. But it’s rooted in ideas around “cosiness”, “presence”, “simplicity” and “togetherness”.

Time spent cooking a nourishing meal? That’s so hygge. Eating that meal with friends and family around the dinner table? That’s hygge, too! Sipping your cup of liquorice tea in your favourite comfy chair? Yup. Hygge.

It’s essentially all about taking pleasure in everyday ritual, finding those things that physically and emotionally nourish you and embracing acts of kindness, both to yourself and others.

Why we love it.

Hygge is essentially everything we’re about!

It embodies all the principles of the I Quit Sugar: 8-Week Program: gentle commitment, eating and moving mindfully, being kind to yourself and finding support in others.

Most of all, it mirrors our commitment to keeping our food – and our lives – simple, whole and nourishing. Basically, we’re so hygge right now.

Hygge at home.

Want to give it a try? Here are some easy ideas to incorporate a little hygge in your life.

  • Just eat real food. Hygge is about eating the way your grandparents did. Think roasted veggies, slow cooked stews, butter, egg yolks… anything that comes from the ground. Not from a box.
  • Cook a beautiful meal. Take the time to choose your favourite ingredients, and cook them slowly and mindfully. (We’re loving these Salmon Burgers from Signe Johansen’s Cookbook How To Hygge.)
  • Share that meal with your friends and family. Even get them involved in the cooking! Gathering loved ones together means there’s more hygge to go around.
  • Commit to daily movement. Find an activity that gets you moving make it yours. Is it a morning walk around your local park? Sunset yoga in your living room? Commit to it every day and take pleasure in the ritual.
