How journaling can help you quit sugar (and maybe even transform your life!)

Do you ever feel like your mind is so crammed full of stuff you can barely think straight?

Those are probably the times when you find yourself reaching for the Mars bar, too. When we’re stressed or overwhelmed, sugar can all too easily become our crutch.

If this sounds familiar, you may benefit from journaling. This simple practice can give you the tools you need to break your sugar addiction for good (and transform other parts of your life as well).

Destressing.

Stress – and the sugar cravings that can come with it – can have a profoundly negative impact on us, both emotionally and physically.

Writing things down in a journal allows you to explore and reflect on stressful situations, releasing the intensity of the negative emotions so you can move past them.

Setting goals.

Our goals feel a lot more real when written down on paper. Like a checklist, journaling about our hopes and dreams makes us feel more accountable to them.

It also allows us to celebrate the wins and achievements, so we can relive the positive emotions that some with, say, saying no to a second slice of office cake.

Staying mindful.

Mindfulness allows you to examine the reasons behind your sugar habit, whether it be peer pressure, boredom or perhaps even comfort eating. Journalling allows you to evoke mindfulness by actively engaging with your thoughts and emotions.

Scientists have also linked mindfulness to health benefits including a stronger immunity, better emotional state, and even in reducing the rate of relapse with depression.

Strengthening discipline.

Like beating sugar addiction, journalling requires a little strengthening of your self discipline muscle. And like a real muscle, it gets stronger and stronger the more you use it.

Our formed habits have a tendency to spread. So, establishing daily disciplined practices like journalling can have a flow on effect into other areas of your life. Like kicking sugar to the curb for good!
