5 cooling summer drinks that are healthier than fruit juice

Just so you know, this is a sponsored post. But the opinions are our own and we researched the topic and came to these conclusions independently.

Our readers know we’re not big fans of fruit juices. And don’t get us started on soft drink!

Question is, what the heck can you drink this summer when you’re trying to avoid these sugary bevvies… and water just ain’t that exciting?

Stay cool! These refreshing, low-sugar summer drinks are sure to quench your thirst.

1. Kombucha.

We love kombucha, a fermented and fizzy tea drink with plenty of good bacteria to improve gut health – perfect if you’ve overindulged in winter. Our mates at Remedy Kombucha make the only store-bought kombucha with less than 0.1g of sugar per 100ml, which you can imagine is pretty good in our books.

“Aside from being incredibly hydrating, kombucha is also full of good stuff for your gut, like probiotics and organic acids,” says Remedy co-founder, Sarah Condon. “These can improve digestion, prevent bloating and boost your metabolism, so you can feel lighter and brighter.”

Try: Crack open a bottle of refreshing sugar-free kombucha and see if you feel the benefits. If you’ve never tried kombucha before, serve with fruit to sweeten, like this Peachy Clean Mocktail.

2. Green smoothie.

Unlike green juices, green smoothies retain all the fibre of the fruit and veg (plus you can add other yummy ingredients, like almond butter and coconut oil). To make sure we’re not overloading on fructose, we bulk our green smoothies with veggies instead of fruit and drink them slowly.

Try: Our Cucumber Cooler Smoothie, with refreshing cucumber, coconut water and mint to combat the hottest days!

3. Chai.

The sweet spices in chai are perfect for fighting off sugar cravings, especially when all your friends are having Golden Gaytimes (note to international audiences: it’s an ice-cream). Skip the sugary stuff in cafés and make your own chai spice mix.

Try: Chai isn’t just a winter drink – try our delicious iced Rooibos Chai for a twist on the old favourite. Starbucks eat your heart out!

4. Iced tea.

Iced tea sounds like a pretty healthy drink, but the commercial stuff gives Coca-Cola a run for its money in terms of sugar content. Not to mention bubble tea! Still, you can make a cooling, antioxidant-rich cuppa at home.

Try: Steeping green tea and adding sparkling water for a soda-like fizz, like this Infused Iced Green Tea recipe does.

5. Fruit-infused water.

For those days when you just want something sweet to sip on, make yourself a fruity mocktail. Take any fruit of your choice, muddle it in sparkling water and add a sprig of herbs. So sophisticated.

Try: We’ve sweetened this No-Booze Blueberry Mojito in with a touch of rice malt syrup, making it a good treat for when frosty Coke is just calling your name.
