5 reasons why you should buy bulk foods (+ your chance to win!)

Written By Unknown on Sunday, 8 May 2016 | 23:21

Remember those sweet shops you went to as kids where you could fill up a paper bag with whatever you liked – gummy teeth, sour worms, cola bottles?

Well, buying bulk foods is just like that… With hundreds of containers of fresh whole foods ready to scoop into paper bags, it’s just like a pick ‘n’ mix for adults. Except with cacao nibs and chickpeas, not lollies!

Of course, there are plenty more reasons to love buying bulk foods, other than just nostalgia. From the environmental benefits to the fact that we can buy the exact amount of ingredients for our I Quit Sugar: 8-Week Program Meal Plans, here’s why should you consider switching to bulk.

1. No more plastic waste.

Buying in bulk means you no longer have to deal with wholly unnecessary plastic packaging (we’re looking at you, shrink-wrapped cucumbers). Many bulk food stores will use recycled paper bags instead, and actively encourage you to bring in your own jars and containers to fill up.

2. It’s usually cheaper.

Again, there’s no ridiculous plastic packaging or expensive brand names so you’re just paying for the product itself. Plus, you can buy exactly what you need (see point 4 below).

3. Bulk foods require fewer carbon miles.

Not only are you reducing your carbon footprint by reducing packaging, but bulk foods are usually sourced locally and don’t require a long-haul flight to get to your plate. The other upshot of this is that bulk foods are often much fresher!

4. You can buy exactly how much you need.

You know that one recipe that requires two tablespoons of flaxseeds, but the smallest package at the supermarket is a half-kilo tub? When you buy in bulk, you can scoop out the exact amount the recipe requires (no minimum purchase!). It’ll save you money and the discovery of a tub of forgotten, possibly weevil-infested flaxseeds in your pantry three months later. (Ain’t nobody got time for pantry moths!).

5. You’re supporting local industry.

When you buy bulk foods, you’re supporting the little guys. It keeps local farms and food producers in business, instead of handing all the power to big supermarkets. Plus, with a small and passionate staff, you’re bound to make a few foodie friends along the way!
