What’s so magic about The Magic Pill?

Written By Unknown on Thursday 31 August 2017 | 23:01

We love staying up to date with the latest health and wellness info to keep you guys well informed.

So recently, a group of us went to watch the latest controversial foodie film, The Magic Pill, to see what all the fuss was about. For those of you who don’t know, the premise of the film is that modern diseases are simply symptoms caused by the food we consume. And, that we can change our health by shifting our eating habits. All seems pretty good so far, right?

But, before we go any further, the film focuses heavily on the benefits of a “high fat, low carb” diet. While at IQS we don’t stick to such “diet labels” (we embrace fats and we’re carb inclusive), we still learnt a lot from this film…

The power of healthy eating is underestimated.

One thing the film successfully highlighted was that many illnesses are born out of poor food choices, and that many doctors are often very quick to hand over prescription medicine, before asking the simple question – what are you eating? The Magic Pill followed people with type 2 diabetes, cancer and even a child with autism to illustrate how their medical conditions greatly improved after tweaking their nutrition – thus bringing home the importance of eating a healthy diet, before reaching for medication.

We can appreciate how much knowledge we already have.

As we’re immersed in the health and wellness industry day in, day out, it’s easy to forget how much knowledge we have gained over the years. In fact, I Quit Sugar just turned four (hooray!), so as a business that focuses on health and science, we have absorbed a lot of knowledge in a short space of time. Our nutritionist Liv says, “As someone who works in health and wellness, sometimes it’s easy to forget that many people still have no idea that what they eat and put into their bodies can make such a huge difference to their health.”

Lastly, the film shed light on the lack of health education available to many Indigenous cultures.

One poignant scene in The Magic Pill showed how one group of Indigenous Australians didn’t know that giving their children Coca Cola was unhealthy, emphasising the huge gap in education that’s formed. The film also looked into studies and programs that highlighted how when these cultures are able to reconnect with the food of the land, and that of their ancestors, their health can improve in a matter of weeks.

While we may not agree with all the advice in The Magic Pill, it certainly emphasised the need for a healthy diet, and at IQS we definitely agree that a nutritious diet is where a healthy life begins!
