If you think back, even five years ago, gluten-free options were either super bland or non-existent!

While times are changing (and we’ve covered tasty gluten-free swaps before), what if you just want to give your food a little kick?

Gluten is hiding in all sorts of sneaky places, so here are some great alternatives for flavour-filled additions to any meal!

Swap soy sauce for tamari.

While you might think soy sauce is the perfect salty addition to your fried rice, turns out it’s made from fermented wheat so there’s a whole load of gluten hiding in there! While tamari might look the same, it actually contains little to no wheat as it’s made from fermented soybeans, but with the same deliciously salty flavour. If you’re coeliac however, make sure you reach for the gluten-free versions just to be on the safe side.

Swap that pre-made stock for homemade.

If you’re using pre-made stock, or even stock cubes, throw them out! Wheat is often added to these to ramp up the flavour and preservatives in that little packet. Instead, try making a big batch of our Easy Chicken Stock, then freeze it in portions for a simple addition to your soups and stews.

Instead of couscous, try grated cauliflower.

If you’re looking for something to bulk out your meals, give grated cauliflower a go. It has a similar texture to couscous but is packed with the benefits of vitamin C and K, manganese and magnesium, just to name a few. What an easy way to get more nutrition into your meals!

Swap pre-made seasoning for our own spice mixes!

Yep, that pre-packaged taco seasoning you bought for taco Tuesday? We hate to break it to you, but it’s probably PACKED with wheat (as well as sugar!). But luckily, most pure spices are gluten-free, so check out these tasty spice combos – you’ll be whipping up those tacos in no time.
