Why smoothies aren’t just for summer

When it’s sweltering outside, there’s no better brekkie than a nourishing green smoothie.

But when it’s chilly (AKA Australia right now), smoothies can seem a little, well, unsatisfying. Some people however, are smoothie lovers through and through so here are some sneaky additions for the perfect winter blend.

Quinoa.

Got a batch of pre-cooked quinoa in your fridge? Pop some in your smoothie for a hit of protein that will keep you full till lunchtime. This super seed also contains all nine amino acids making it the perfect energy-boosting addition to your green smoothie.

Cinnamon.

You know we love cinnamon (understatement of the century!), but it’s good for more than just sprinkling on your porridge. If you love a smoothie, why not add a dash to your blender? Not only does cinnamon help to prevent blood sugar spikes, but there’s nothing that warms the heart more than our fave sweet spice.

Zucchini.

Need an excuse to get an extra serve of veggies into your diet? Why not blend our fave mean and green veg into your morning smoothie. Yes, it might seem weird at first but trust us, once you pop a zucchini in your smoothie, there’s no turning back.

Nut butter.

We agree that during winter, often you need a little extra something to keep you feeling full and satisfied. Enter – nut butter! Full of healthy fats, a spoonful of nut butter will not only ensure your smoothie is as satiating as it is delicious, but it will also add the perfect creamy texture to your blend too.

Ginger.

Instead of adding ginger to your stir-fry, grate it into your smoothie as this gut-boosting spice aids digestion and fires up the metabolism. If you’re not a fan of its strong flavour, try adding a squeeze of lemon or lime which will bring your blend back into balance.
