How ditching the sweet stuff can help our hormones

Struggling to lose weight? Searching for the perfect serum to combat fine lines and dull skin? Or do you feel hungry, even after you’ve just eaten?

Almost everyone will battle with one of these issues at some point in their lives, but the good news is that our diet can provide the answers to help us manage these pesky symptoms.

Whilst they may seem unrelated, the common thread can be our hormones. And, the good news is that hormones respond very well to a bit of TLC.

Put simply, hormones act as special chemical messengers reporting to nearly every cell in the body. They’re produced by our endocrine system and help to regulate our metabolism, hunger, weight, growth, development, sexual function, reproduction, sleep, mood, and the activity of our cells and organs. As you can imagine, keeping them balanced is an incredibly tough job and everything from sleep problems, PMS, fatigue, weight fluctuations and even dull, dry skin can be influenced by how our hormones are running.

What we eat provides valuable fuel for our bodies. So, what happens to our hormones when we improve our nutrition and quit the sweet stuff?

Your weight will regulate.

Sugar, particularly fructose, has the ability to avoid detection by our appetite and blood sugar regulating hormones, going straight to the liver to build fat. The problem with this is that your insulin levels are responsible for maintaining energy balance, and without detecting fructose, they are unaware of a surplus in energy which has just been consumed – even though fat is being made and stored. By quitting sugar, your body weight regulates, particularly around your mid-section.

You’ll feel and look younger.

Insulin’s role is to regulate your blood sugar levels and balance your energy, however studies have shown that too much insulin in the blood can lower the production of human growth hormone, dubbed “the fountain of youth”. Human growth hormone increases your metabolism, increases skin cell turnover and boosts muscle strength! Reducing sugar normalises the production of insulin, just as consuming too much sugar can do the opposite.

You’ll understand your hunger signals.

Leptin is another vital hormone that aids in energy balance, but it also assists in appetite reduction by letting us know when we’re feeling satiated. By ditching sugar, our hunger hormones regulate and become more equipped to tune into when we’re actually hungry – and when we’re full.
