- The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) launched legal action in June last year against Heinz and its toddler food product, “Little Kids Shredz”.
- The product is marketed as containing 99% fruit and veg. But, the “berries, apple and veg” flavour contains more than 60% sugar per 100 grams – with experts claiming the product should, in fact, be considered confectionery.
- Heinz however, have rejected the ACCC claims stating, “The Shredz products had a similar nutrition profile to dried apple or sultanas.”
At IQS, we’ve made no secret of our stance against Big Food, Big Sugar and their sometimes misleading claims about the nutritional content of products. But now, for one food giant at least, it seems they’re finally being called out on their marketing messages.
This week, legal proceedings commenced in the action taken by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission over Heinz’s “Little Kids Shredz” toddler food.
Nutritionist and dietitian, Rosemary Stanton has been called to give evidence in the case and supported the ACCC claims that the product resembled confectionery.
While it’s no question that we still have a long way to go when it comes to reducing our sugar consumption here in Australia, actions such as this are definitely a step in the right direction.
