Surprise! Heinz toddler food packed with sugar…

At IQS, we’ve made no secret of our stance against Big Food, Big Sugar and their sometimes misleading claims about the nutritional content of products. But now, for one food giant at least, it seems they’re finally being called out on their marketing messages.

This week, legal proceedings commenced in the action taken by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission over Heinz’s “Little Kids Shredz” toddler food.

Nutritionist and dietitian, Rosemary Stanton has been called to give evidence in the case and supported the ACCC claims that the product resembled confectionery.

“We have 50 per cent of children, in the oneto-three or the two-to-three age group, who are having more than the maximum amount of recommended sugars. We have some very real problems,” she said.

While it’s no question that we still have a long way to go when it comes to reducing our sugar consumption here in Australia, actions such as this are definitely a step in the right direction.
