How to stay fit and healthy (when you’re too cold to care)

Written By Unknown on Tuesday 4 July 2017 | 18:02

To all our Northern Hemisphere friends enjoying summer in full swing, we’re very, very jealous.

To everyone freezing Down Under right now – we feel you! One month down, two to go (but who’s counting, right?)

With the cold air numbing your nostrils, it’s easy to throw your healthy habits out the window and retreat into hibernation.

But if you stick to these simple solutions, you can stay fit and cruise right through winter…

1. Warm up before you step outside.

Opening the front door and having the cold air instantly freeze you to the core is without a doubt the hardest thing about training in winter.

To combat this, get your muscles moving and your heart pumping with some star jumps or jog on the spot before you step outside. Make sure you wrap up warm too.

2. Pack your bag the night before.

Yep, just like you do for your kids! The last thing you want to be doing when you’re trying to convince yourself to get moving is rummage around your room searching for your clothes.

If you train in the morning, lay your gear out (underwear, socks and all!) near your bed so you can stumble out of bed and throw them on. If you train after work, pack your bag with a change of clothes, snacks and a water bottle and leave it by the door for easy access when you’re sprinting off to work.

3. Don’t be lured in by the couch.

Speaking of work… Once you get home, don’t be tempted to melt into your couch – never to emerge again. If you do fall into the category of those who prefer to train in the evening, get your session in straight after work.

Sometimes we like to do a quick change at the IQS office before we even head out the door – ensuring there’s no room for excuses!

4. Embrace winter sports.

If snowboarding or skiing is your thing, now’s your chance to make the most of it. Hit the slopes, and workout while having fun. If you’ve not mastered these winter sports yet, it’s never too late to get involved.

5. Set yourself a spring goal.

One of the best ways to stay motivated is to set a goal with an end in sight. By spring you could be sprinting up those stairs at work. Or, have you thought about doing a fun run? Maybe you could book a holiday? Choose something that’s sure to make you ‘spring’ out of bed in the morning.

Happy moving!
