How to keep your detox organs healthy (so they can say “see ya” to sugar)

Headaches.. mood swings… night sweats, sugar withdrawal can be a wild ride.

Your body goes through a natural detoxification process every single day. When you quit sugar (and by association, processed foods), your body works even harder. Which can put a bit of strain on your detox organs, making you feel baseline crappy for a while.

To see you through, these easy tips will help support your detox organs as you say “see ya!” to the sweet stuff.

Skin support.

As your largest living organ (crazy right?), your skin is in constant exchange with your inside and outside worlds, absorbing and releasing toxins through your sweat.

Support your skin through the detox phase by drinking plenty of water, doing some daily mindful exercise and chowing down on some antioxidant-rich foods like blueberries, purple cabbage and beetroot.

Love your liver.

Your liver is like your body’s waste plant. It decides if stuff is safe enough to be used by the body, or if they should be shown the door (to the bowel).

Because fructose is metabolised exclusively by the liver, the sugar detox process can freak this particular organ out quite a bit as it adjusts to the change.

Bitter foods like cabbage, broccoli, leafy greens and lemons give your liver a little love. It can also be helpful to keep minimise your drinking when you’re in the throws of sugar withdrawal, to eliminate any extra stress.

Kidney kickstart.

It’s the kidney’s job to flush toxins from your blood and send them to the bladder to be, er, removed. The best thing you can do to support these guys through sugar detox is drink plenty of water.

Green herbs and green tea can also help. They act as weak diuretics that promote kidney detox without sending your electrolytes into a tailspin.

Keep it moving.

The lymphatic system is like your blood stream’s parallel universe, dealing with all the byproducts of bacterial and viral infections and keeping anything dangerous out of main circulation (what a hero!).

Ginger, lemon, garlic and anti-inflammatory turmeric are all great lymph supporters. Working up a light sweat through some gentle cardio can also keep things moving along.

Heal your gut.

Your gut is home to trillions of protective, immune-boosting bacteria that help you eliminate toxins and stay healthy. So, as you can imagine, things can all go a little haywire if you’re not looking after it.

Support your gut by eating plenty of probiotics (like kefir, kombucha, sauerkraut, kimchi) and prebiotic foods (like vegetables, seeds and legumes). You can also try gelatin, which can help heal the gut lining and keep the nasties at bay. Hooray!
