NEWS: The Greens announce “parliamentary push” for an Aussie sugar tax

Written By Unknown on Wednesday, 23 November 2016 | 21:15

  • If the Government doesn’t act, the Greens will introduce a Bill on the matter.

The Australian Greens aim to launch a parliamentary inquiry into obesity to inform legislation on a much called-for sugar tax.

This is the second time the Greens have announced their support since signing our petition in June. As well as the tax, the proposed inquiry into obesity will inform legislation on policies including clear food labelling and junk food advertising restrictions. About time!

“We know that up to 30 per cent of the sugar Australian kids consume daily comes from nutrition-free sugar-sweetened drinks,” said Senator Dr Richard Di Natale, a qualified a general practitioner and public health specialist.

“A tax on these drinks will drive down consumption and should form a part of the response to childhood obesity in this country,”

Yesterday, we reported on The Grattan Institute’s claims that a 40 per cent sugar tax would cause a 15 per cent drop in sugary drinks and help fight obesity. It seems the ball is definitely rolling!

Of course, the Government might still fail to act on the inquiry? Did you see Barnaby Joyce’s response? If so, the Greens have an ultimatum – they will introduce a Private Senator’s Bill by the end of 2017 to give the Government a much-needed kick in the pants. And we’re sure to be involved!

Do you support The Greens’ push for a sugar tax?
