How to use a spiralizer

Written By Unknown on Tuesday 12 July 2016 | 13:12

If you’re looking for a quick and easy gluten-free replacement for the spaghetti in your next spag bol, the spiralizer is your new best friend!

Similar to the mandolin that preceded it, spiralizers are bladed kitchen gadgets that will transform your humble zucchini into “zucchetti” at the flick of a blade. They work like a giant pencil sharpener, allowing cooks to place almost any firm veggie into the contraption and transform the contents into a pile of long spaghetti-like strands.

Although raw zoodles (zucchini + noodles) are among the most recognisable spiralized creations, if you want to try something different, these three options will add a healthy twist to some of your favourite foods.

  1. Wrap up with carrot ribbons.

Most spiralizers come with different blades. If yours has a slicing or ribbon blade, use it to create raw carrot ribbons. These ribbons add texture and crunch to salads and are also a great addition to stir fries. In fact, almost any firm vegetable can be spiralized into a ribbon. Simply ensure the veggie isn’t hollow, has a firm flesh and does not have any large seeds.

  1. Chip in for sweet potato chips.

Spiralizers with a thicker noodle blade are perfect for creating sweet potato curly fries.  Simply spiralize some sweet potato, toss in a little olive oil and bake until crisp. A perfect way to update these Sweet Potato Crisps, perhaps? This setting is also great for creating fancy garnishes from citrus fruits like lemon and lime for your smoothies.

  1. Not quite Pad Thai.

For a no-noodle take on the classic Thai dish, consider spiralizing some daikon radishes into thick noodles for a lighter replacement of the original carb-loaded type. While daikon noodles can sometimes have a bitter flavour, stir frying them should remove this. They also hold sauces fairly well.
