- Sugary drinks (including juice!) have been banned in 13 health services across Western Victoria.
- This follows a similar ban in 31 health facilities in Murrumbidgee Local Health District.
- Should the Australian Government roll out a nationwide ban?
Hospital is supposed to a place where you get well, so we’re glad that health authorities are finally realising that unhealthy sugary drinks don’t belong there.
Thirteen health services across Western Victoria have introduced a ban on sugary drinks, from fruit juice to Coca-Cola, in an effort to address growing levels of obesity. About time!
The ban follows a similar move by Murrumbidgee Local Health District (which serves nearly 241,000 residents) to cease the sale of sugar-sweetened drinks in 31 hospitals in the NSW Riverina.
Hospitals all around the world are also taking a stand. New Zealand has banned sugar-sweetened drinks in all hospitals (go Kiwis!) while the NHS in England will impose its own tax on high-sugar drinks and snacks sold in cafes and vending machines to discourage patients, visitors and staff from buying them.
With sugary drinks having no place in a health facility, we think the Australian Government should make the ban legitimate and introduce it in hospitals nationwide. What do you think? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
