Par-cooking and freezing is a great way to extend the shelf life of your favourite veggies, making it easier to eat well and quit sugar without too much pain.
But if you’re after a little unconventional advice on keeping your produce fresh, these five quirky tips will also help your vegetables last longer.

Store your tomatoes upside down.
Are the tomatoes at your local farmers’ markets piled stem-side down?
While many retailers reckon it makes for a prettier display, storing a tomato this way may also prevent moisture from entering the fruit and thus prolong its shelf life.
Although, if you do store your tomatoes with the stem facing the ground be careful handling them. The exposed shoulders can make them more prone to bruising.

Keep your onions in pantyhose.
If you’re stocking up on opaque tights in preparation for winter, consider buying a pair for your onions! To help maximise the shelf life of this veggie (we’re talking up to eight months) grab a pair of pantyhose, place onions in the leg, tie a knot between each onion to keep them separated and hang the hose from your ceiling. This is said to allow for easy evaporation of environmental moisture, and also keep the onions from bruising.
The result: It’ll add a touch of rustic Italian village to your decor, and you won’t have to buy another onion for 240 days. (Unless of course you make our French Onion Soup in the meantime).

Keep your potatoes with apples (or not).
The jury is still out on this one but according to certain studies apples and potatoes can be stored together like peas in a proverbial pod.
The research states that a ripe apple emits ethylene gas, which stop the potato from sprouting. However, other studies disagree that this gas is beneficial.

Wrap carrots, beets and parsnip with a wet towel.
What do carrots, beets and parsnip have in common? As well being amazingly healthy and delicious, the freshness of all these root veggies can be maximised with a simple trick.
Simply cut off their leaves and store in an open container in your fridge covered with a wet towel.

Refresh lettuce with an ice bath.
A freezing cold bath is known to help aching muscles and it can have a similar effect on limp lettuce. Just place lettuce leaves in a large bowl of ice water and shake for a minute or two. Watch as formerly sad-looking leaves are brought back to life and proceed to make Turkey Larb in Cos Lettuce Cups as required.
