Kimchi, kombucha and ‘kraut are known for their gut-healing goodness but there’s another fermented food that, unexpectedly, might be just as effective.
Tucking into avo on sourdough for lunch rather than fermented veggies? Don’t feel bad. Sourdough could be as good for your guts as kimchi and sauerkraut are.
What the frick is fermentation anyway?
Lacto-fermentation refers to the process of preserving foods using salt (and sometimes whey) to encourage the foods natural “good” (lactobacillus bacteria) to flourish. Fermentation also converts sugar in a food into a lactic acid that staves off dodgy bacteria.
Our 5 favourite fermented foods (and the benefits of eating bacteria).
1. Sourdough
Sourdough bread taste ah-mazing. Plus, the lactic acid produced during the fermentation process can improve your body’s digestive process by lowering glucose responses and keeping you satiated for longer.
2. Sauerkraut
When it comes to fermented foods, ‘kraut is king. During the fermentation process the cabbage and salt used to make sauerkraut produce beneficial probiotics linked to improvements in immune, cognitive, digestive and endocrine function.
3. Kimchi
Koreans are crazy about their version of fermented cabbages, and with good reason. The lactic acid produced during fermentation promotes the growth of healthy flora in the intestines. And while a healthy gut microbiome is vital for digestive wellness, it also has a heap of other overall benefits too.
4. Kefir
The probiotics in this fermented yoghurt super-charge your gut bacteria. As a result this lowers your risk of digestive disorders like leaky gut syndrome and IBS. Probiotic-rich fermented foods like kefir can also benefit your entire body, reducing the risk of conditions such as depression and anxiety and improving inflammation related to various autoimmune diseases.
5. Kombucha
This fermented tea has been reported to improve gut health by soothing the painful symptoms of bloating. It has also been said to help break down nutrients so they’re easily digestible and better absorbed. In particular, kombucha enhances the absorption of calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium, phosphorous and copper. Here are 16 other reasons to drink the stuff…
