If you’ve ever tried to plan a sugar-free kid’s birthday party or play date after school, you’ll know finding food that all the little ones are happy with can be a bit of an ordeal.
We spoke to some of our I Quit Sugar: 8-Week Program ambassadors (who also happen to be mums) for real-life suggestions that are easy, delicious and healthy. Their ideas prove that you don’t need fairy bread and fizzy drinks to have fun.
1. A kid’s birthday party
Whether you’re hosting your own or need to bring something to a party you’ve been invited to, we like these suggestion from ambassador Jenny.
“I recently catered my daughter Kate’s fourth birthday. I made ladybirds out of a half a red apple placed face down with blueberry or grape eyes, and spots made of berries or a chocolate mix of cacao and coconut oil.
I also made butterfly popcorn by dusting homemade popcorn with cinnamon then placing it in a snack size ziplock bag and tying it with twistie tie to resemble a butterfly.
Blueberry mousse was also a hit. I made this by blending frozen blueberries, coconut cream, vanilla extract and chia seeds together and leaving overnight. Again allergy-friendly and super easy!”
2. Play date in the park.
Ambassador Elise is a mother of three who knows the trick to a successful play date is catering to little mouths and supervising adults, too.
She suggests pizzas, mini fritters and pasta veggie cups, which can all be eaten cold.
“I prepare pasta veggie cups using cooked spaghetti, mixed with egg, grated veggies, cheese and finely chopped basil. Then I cook in greased muffin tins in a fan-forced oven on 180°C for 20 minutes. These don’t have to be re-heated, and both kids and adults love them.”
3. Bring a plate day at school.
Mother of two and ambassador Erin quit sugar with her family and is ready to conquer the world with her sugar-free kids message. Starting in the classroom.
“I’m a big fan of providing savoury options at bring a plate days at school, rather than just a bunch of sweet stuff. I really like corn on the cob, Pork and Fennel Sausage Rolls and Sweet Potato Crisps.“
All delicious, all healthy and all allergy-free.
4. School sports day.
Ambassador Marissa knows all about eating for energy. She has three kids and keeping up with them requires a lot of it!
For days when they (or she!) need a little extra push, like at the annual swimming carnival, Marissa makes allergy-free Turmeric Fudge. She also suggests water infused with cucumbers, berries, mint or herbs. “It’s great for hydrating at a sports day.”
5. A teddy bear’s picnic.
To pack the perfect kids’ picnic, try these suggestions from ambassador Jennifer – mother of a two-year-old girl.
“I pack sticky chicken wings or drumsticks, savoury muffins (I use the Sweet Potato, Kale + Feta Muffins but add corn because my daughter eats anything with corn in it!) and cheese and veggie sticks.”
