Quitting sugar and saving money need not be mutually exclusive. In fact, our I Quit Sugar: 8-Week Program is full of tips and tricks to make healthy eating on a budget easy.
But with the next Program still a week or two away, here’s some tips from Sarah and the I Quit Sugar team on how to save money at the supermarket till – bland food not included.
- Start saving before you even step into the supermarket.
Our director Sarah won’t buy anything until she’s finished what she already has in the fridge or pantry.
“I completely run out of yoghurt before I buy another,” she says. “That way I find myself using up the last of the sour cream or cheese in the interim. I also shop every few days, rather than do a weekly shop.”
- Cook from scratch.
Writer Rachel avoids the temptation to buy processed packaged sauces and makes her own.
“I buy whatever veggies are on sale and make my sauces from scratch. You end up with a giant pot full which you can freeze and use for months.”
- Buy in bulk.
We love this tip from KK, our programs manager.
“I hit up a bulk food store and just buy the nuts, seeds, grains and flours that I need for the week. The weekly price is smaller and there’s less risk of pantry items going rancid before I’ve had a chance to use them!”
- Look for secondary cuts of meat.
Meagan, our operations manager, saves her cash by buying cheap cuts of meat.
“Meat with the skin and and bone is tastier costs less. And the bones can be used to create a stock for another meal.”
- Avoid the middle aisles.
Our head of content Lorna says, “I check out the veggies in the imperfect picks section and base my meals around whatever is there. And I avoid the middle aisles of the supermarket. There’s usually nothing there apart from expensive processed junk.”
- Make a list.
Make a list, and check it twice! That’s what Mary our office co-ordinator does to stick to budget. “That way I am not tempted to buy everything in sight,” she says.
- Stock up on meats that are reduced to clear.
Programs co-ordinator Matt goes to town on discounted meats and buys whatever cut is about to go out of date.
“I’m not fussy and just base my meals around what I can buy as cheaply as possible. I usually end up with something perfect for slow cooking.”
- Head to the markets.
Ray, our senior developer, recommends skipping the supermarket entirely and getting your produce elsewhere.
“I enjoy going to Sydney’s Paddy’s Markets early on a weekend. You avoid the after-work crowds and it’s much cheaper. Last week I bought avocados for $1!”
- Stick to stuff on sale.
They’re called specials for a reason! Our marketing executive Alyssa says recommends choosing the brand that’s on sale.
“For example, there’s a couple of different brands of Greek yoghurt that I know are all great because I’ve done my research, so when I’m at the supermarket I’ll buy whichever one is on special that week. Same goes for cheeses, coconut water and bread.”
- Plan before you purchase.
Meg, our recipe developer, suggests planning your meals so you know exactly what you need to buy.
“I didn’t do this last weekend and ended up leaving with a whole smoked trout. Totally unnecessary!”
