Ever wondered what the other 3 sides of your box grater are actually for?!

We’ve all got that classic silver box grater hiding in the depths of our cupboards that is only pulled out when we need to grate cheese or the odd carrot…

But, if you’re anything like us, we only ever use one side of the box grater. What do you even do with the other three sides of it?! In the hopes of making this piece of equipment multi-functional – because that’s what it was designed for – we decided to find out exactly what the other three sides can do in order to use the humble box grater to its full potential.

The side you always use.

The side with the biggest holes is the one that you always use, right? It’s perfect for grating a slab of hard cheese or carrots for your bolognese. You probably already have the use of this one down-pat but this is just a friendly reminder that this side can be used beyond cheese. It’s also great for grating zucchinis to make zucchini fritters or try grating tomatoes to create a fresh pasta sauce!

The prickly holes.

You know the side that shreds your hands every time you’re searching for the grater in the dark? Yeah, it’s probably shredded your skin more times than it’s actually shredded food! These small holes are actually perfect for grating hard cheeses into a super fine texture like those pre-packaged Parmesan shakers you can buy at the supermarket. You can also zest citrus fruits like oranges, lemons and limes on this side as well as whole nutmeg or cinnamon. But, be careful of your precious fingers when using this side – it can be lethal!

The mini version of the side you always use.

These small holes are basically the same as your favourite side just smaller. So, once again, hard cheeses are great for this side – use it to grate fine spirals of Parmesan onto your pasta. You can also use this one to grate whole garlic and ginger, or if you’re after smaller sized spirals of carrot or zucchini.

The wide slice.

This side of the box grater is just straight up scary looking – it looks like it could take a slice off your finger if you’re not careful. And, it’s probably the most overlooked part of the box grater as well. We’re here to tell you that this slicer can be seriously handy! You can slice all matter of veggies on this side and it’s particularly good when you’re creating dishes like potato bake or ratatouille. In summer, use this side to finely slice radishes, cucumber or fennel for salads. Or, just to keep teaming with the cheese theme, use it to cut thin slices of Parmesan cheese to add to rocket salads.

Do you use four sides of your box grater? Or, have we encouraged you to become a little more daring when it comes to grating?
