8 healthy essentials to keep at your work desk

Written By Unknown on Saturday, 17 March 2018 | 11:03

Sometimes, all that hard work requires a little fuel. Agreed?

And while we don’t recommend mindless snacking, sometimes you really do need a boost to get you through to the end of the day. The vending machine certainly isn’t doing you any favours, so ditch it in favour of some of our favourite sugar-free essentials (both edible and inedible!) to keep at your work desk…

If you want something moreish, try…

Activated almonds! Alex, our writer + content creator, keeps a bag of activated almonds in her drawer for maximum crunch when hunger strikes. Activated nuts are easier on the digestion and have a texture that’s to-die-for. Any nut is a good nut in our opinion, so choose your fave and try them in this recipe.

If you want something rich, try…

Dark chocolate! Not quite satisfied after a meal? A few squares of choc (with at least 85% cacao) should do the trick. It’s even suggested that cocoa may improve cognitive function!

If you want something satisfying, try…

Peanut butter! It comes as no surprise that everyone in the IQS office mentioned PB as the ultimate desk snack. Indeed, if you can stick to a tablespoon or two, then nut butters are the perfect snack to fuel your day. They’re a good source of protein and healthy, satiating fats and they pair perfectly with a piece of fruit. Probs best not to keep a spoon at your desk though. Word on the street is that doing so increases the chance of ‘going overboard’ by 100 per cent.

If you want comfort food, try…

Oatmeal. Becky, our customer service team lead, rates rolled oats as her numero uno snack. Just add milk or water, heat and eat! Oats are fibre-rich, filling and pair with pretty much anything – like, um, peanut butter.

If you want something stimulating, try…

Matcha tea! Matcha does contain caffeine – about the same as a cup of coffee – but it’s considered to be a “calming stimulant”. Proponents of matcha suggest that it’ll give you a boost of energy and focus without giving you the jitters. Sounds like a matcha made in heaven.

It you’re bored of water, try…

Kombucha! Okay, so you probably don’t have an inbuilt mini fridge at your desk, but if you’re heading towards the vending machine, we suggest making a beeline for your nearest kombucha stockist instead! Kombucha is good for your guts, low in sugar and the perfect 3pm pick-me-up. New research reveals that Kombucha may also boast some pretty interesting health benefits…

If you’re feeling wired, try…

A salt lamp – not all desk essentials need to be food-related! Trish, our head of marketing, has a salt lamp at her desk that gives her corner of the world a relaxing, ambient glow. You might like to consider one if your desk is seriously lacking in vibes.

If you’re feeling uninspired, try…

Flowers and plants! Rather than waiting wistfully for the courier to surprise you with a mystery bouquet, buy yourself some flowers and bring the outside in! Office-friendly plants or cacti also work a treat and will stick around a lot longer. The benefits of surrounding yourself with plants are well documented. Productivity boost, anyone?

If you’re in a funk, try…

Essential oils. These fragrant and functional oils are sourced from the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers and other parts of plants. Try sniffing citrus blends for a pick-me-up, lavender for its calming effects or peppermint for refreshment. You can diffuse them in an oil diffuser or dab them on your skin with a carrier oil.

What do you keep at your desk to ensure that you stick to your sugar-free goals?
