In the wellness world, there are endless trends that come and go.
While some trends stick around for a few years (hello, avo toast + fermented foods!), others disappear into the void just as quickly as they appeared – blue algae lattes, anyone?
But, there are a handful of healthy habits that we will never quit. Much like the famed “little black dress” of the fashion world, these babies are timeless…
1. Eating farm to fork.
We’re big on food sustainability here at IQS and that’s why we do our best to eat food that has been produced locally and that’s in season. Whether you call this farm to fork, paddock to plate or farm to table – this is our preferred method of sourcing our food and it’s one that will never date. When you purchase your produce from your local farmers market, fishmonger, butcher or bakery, you’re supporting your local economy as well as reducing unnecessary carbon miles. And, not only is the food much cheaper, but it’s also healthier as it hasn’t been refrigerated or frozen and transported across the world.
2. JERFing.
If you haven’t heard of JERFing before, it means ‘just eat real food’ and it’s the mantra we live by! Choosing quality foods with the least number of ingredients is the best way to stay healthy and fighting fit, with very little effort. Forget the packaged foods with ingredient lists as long as your arm (with names you can’t pronounce!) and instead, fill your plate with fresh and unprocessed whole foods. Our grandparents did it – as did the generations before them – so if it’s good enough for them, it’s certainly good enough for us!
3. Living a low-sugar life.
We bang on about food freedom quite a lot because once you’ve experienced sugar-less food freedom for yourself, you’ll want to share how great you feel with everyone you know! Having the ability to stop eating when you actually feel full and jumping off the endless sugary merry-go-round is life-changing. And, this all comes about by living a low-sugar life. Having food freedom is something we will never get over. Ever!
4. Mindful living.
While the word mindfulness might seem very trendy, it’s actually a practice which yields great results. Trust us, mindful living will stand the test of time as the benefits, which include positive emotional states and stronger immune responses, are simply too good to write off as a trend. You can easily practice mindfulness when walking, sitting and eating – or bring it into your home through plants and natural light. We’ll be practising mindful living until the cows come home!
5. Giving a shit about the environment!
Slurping your smoothie through a single-use plastic cup and straw might be convenient and have little short-term effect on you as an individual, but have you considered the long-term effect on our environment? Caring about the what state we leave the planet in for future generations is super important – and always will be. So, it’s time to make a start by ditching all single-use plastics – this includes bags, bottles, coffee cups and straws – and invest in reusable items that won’t end up in landfill. Do you really want to be leaving an ocean that contains more plastic than fish for your great, great grandkids?
