Foods that you prob think are healthy (but our nutritionist doesn’t!)

Everyone knows that chowing down on a choccy bar isn’t doing your health any favours…

But, there are some sneaky foods which many people think are healthy, which are actually swimming in sugar and additives! Next time you go to grab a flavoured water from the supermarket, think again!

We had our in-house nutritionist, Georgia, weigh in on the following foods to explain why they aren’t so stellar for you!

  • Dried fruit.

Dried fruit like sultanas, raisins and apricots are basically just concentrated sugar! For example, ½ cup of fresh cranberries contains 2g sugar compared to ½ cup of dried cranberries, which contains 37g sugar – enough said! Always opt for fresh, whole fruit over dried!”

“While the berry itself boasts a bunch of nutritional benefits, what actually goes into an açai bowl can send the sugar content through the roof. And, these little berries are usually blended with a couple of bananas, fruit juice and topped with crunchy granola – sugar, sugar and more sugar! Stick to fresh berries, full-fat yoghurt and a home-made granola or oats instead.”

  • Flavoured water.

“Just one look at the nutritional panel and you’ll see that many flavoured “healthy” waters contain as much sugar as Coke. And don’t be fooled by the sugar-free versions  – artificial sweeteners galore! Try flavouring your own water with fresh berries, lemon, lime or cucumber!”

  • Sushi.

“Believe it or not, the rice in sushi contains a mix of rice wine vinegar and… sugar! I’ve found the perfect loophole though – next time you go to Sushi train, order some sashimi and a bowl of fresh white rice for a deconstructed, sugar-free version!”

  • Raw desserts.

“Touted as “healthy”, raw desserts can actually contain the same, if not more sugar than regular desserts. Always check the nutritional panel first and steer clear of ingredients like agave syrup, coconut sugar and maple syrup!”
