The classic Christmas sweets we avoid

Written By Unknown on Monday, 18 December 2017 | 10:02

You can tell it’s Christmas time when gingerbread is literally for sale everywhere you go…

During the silly season, there are many festive sweet treats that we tend to avoid – simply because they are swimming in sugar! From good ol’ gingerbread men to Italian panforte, these are the treats we politely decline.

1. Snickerdoodles.

These classic American cookies are extremely popular at Christmas time. While these cinnamon-flavoured bickies might look appetising, they actually contain stacks of sugar (both inside and out) as they’re rolled in cinnamon sugar before being baked. Instead of inhaling a mouthful of the sweet stuff nibbling these cookies, we opt for our Simply Sweet Biscuits – which go down a treat with a cuppa!

2. Candied nuts.

Sugar-coated nuts seem to pop up everywhere come December, but it’s best to steer clear of these little sugar bombs. We’re usually nuts about nuts, but we prefer our healthy fats without the lashings of white and brown sugar. Instead, whip up our Spicy Activated Nuts for a healthy, sugar-free snack!

3. Gingerbread.

While those little gingerbread men might look inviting, don’t fall for their cute faces! Gingerbread is brimming with brown sugar and golden syrup – AKA, fructose overload – as well as stacks of icing sugar for decoration. But, because we love the ginger flavour we made our own fructose-free version, without the icky icing – Gingerbread Christmas Cookies.

4. Panforte.

This traditional Italian Christmas cake is filled with dried fruit – figs, apricots and peel, to be exact – as well as liberal amounts of caster sugar and honey and a dusting of icing sugar to finish. We literally can’t stomach the amount of sweetness in this dessert, so instead, we opt for our Sugar-Free Christmas Cake, which contains zero dried fruit!

5. Gluhwein.

A German-Austrian mulled wine, Gluhwein looks inviting but it’s best to decline this Christmassy bevvy as it has a pretty substantial sugar content. We created our own mulled wine recipe that uses fresh fruit and a small amount of RMS instead of white sugar.

6. Linzer cookies.

Linzer cookies contain two biscuits sandwiched together with a jammy middle and hail from Austria. But, these bad boys are swimming with brown sugar, icing sugar and sugary jam, so it’s best to opt out. Instead, try our Thumbprint Cookies which are filled with our fructose-free Raspberry Chia Jam. Yum!

7. Yule log.

While a chocolate yule log cake might look festive, it’s bursting with the sweet stuff. From the creamy and cakey filling to the choccy topping – there’s a lot of sugar in this dessert. Instead of trying to recreate this, why not try something that won’t leave you with a sugar hangover, like our Chocolate Cherry Tart!
