Forget the beauty cream! Try this collagen-rich food instead

Written By Unknown on Sunday, 3 December 2017 | 19:03

There’s a good chance that in the past you’ve used a beauty product that contained collagen.

But, why is collagen so important for your skin? Put simply, it’s the protein that keeps your skin looking plump, wrinkle-free and young.

Lifestyle factors (including a high sugar diet!), as well as ageing, can affect the production of collagen, so adding sources of collagen into your diet is vital when it comes to maintaining youthful looking skin!

And the easiest way to consume collagen? Gelatin! Our very own Gut Lovin’ Gelatin is made from the bones, hides and connective tissues of animals and it’s these bits and bobs that contain huge amounts of protein as well as 18 amino acids and, of course, collagen!

While we love nothing more than whipping up a batch of gummies with our gelatin, there are a plethora of other ways you can use it…

1. Bulletproof coffee.

Enjoying a bulletproof coffee for brekkie took the world by storm a few years ago, but we’ve updated the way we drink this beverage. Sneak a tablespoon of gelatin into your blender – along with your black coffee, grass-fed butter, coconut or MCT oil – and you’ll be reaping the rewards in no time. Plus, we promise you can’t taste it over the frothy flavour of the butter!

2. Marshmallows.

We’ve reinvented these pink and white treats from your childhood using gut-friendly gelatin! Our Coconut “Marshmallows” are sugar-free and will fill any craving you may have for this nostalgic food. If you want to take these marshmallows one step further, then try our Off The Wagon Wheel slice which is super low in sugar and won’t send your blood sugar skyrocketing like commercial bickies.

3. Ice cream.

Yep, that’s right, you can eat ice cream and boost your gut health at the same time! Gelatin is frequently used in commercial ice creams as a bonding agent so why not try making your own using our gelatin in the same way with whole food ingredients? This Dairy-Free Coconut Ice Cream is super tasty and filled with healthy fats, protein and gelatin.

4. Homemade sauces.

Gelatin is perfect for adding a little thickness to homemade sauces and gravies. Instead of whipping up a roux to thicken your sauce, simply mix 1 ½ teaspoons of gelatin with 2 tablespoons of water – this is enough for one cup of sauce. Stir quickly for 30 seconds and then let the mixture sit for 5 minutes to “bloom”. Then, add to your sauce and voilĂ !

5. Smoothies.

Instead of using protein powder in your morning smoothie, simply add a tablespoon of gelatin in its place! Simple.

Live in NZ and keen to try our gelatin? Good news – we now ship across the ditch!
