How much sugar is in that… wrap!

Written By Unknown on Monday, 27 November 2017 | 16:12

We don’t know about you, but we think wraps are one of the easiest on the go lunches.

But to save you from picking up a sugar bomb, we’ve been wrapping ourselves silly in the office – here’s a nutritional breakdown and taste profile of four popular wraps. Ready, set, go…

Simson’s Pantry Four Seeds.

These ones came wrapped up with a lot of promise (pun intended!), screaming “easy fold, easy filling” right on the front. And, as that’s all anyone ever wants from a wrap, we had high hopes for this product. But, they all came crashing down again when we flipped the packet and got a glimpse of not only the whopping ingredients list, but the nutritional panel too! Sugar is the sixth ingredient (behind vegetable oil and preservatives), with 3.7g of sugar per 100g. While that might not seem like much, these had the highest amount of sugar of all the wraps we tasted. Plus, our senior content and editorial manager, Ash, said the aftertaste was somewhat plasticky from all those fake vegetable oils! All in all, we definitely wouldn’t recommend tucking into these for lunch.

Mountain Bread Rye.

First things first, we love wholemeal flour because it’s less processed than the white stuff, so already this product gets a big tick! The fact that there are only four ingredients too (two types of flour, water and salt), earns these beauties a double thumbs up. In terms of taste, they had a plain flavour, but that’s exactly what we want from a wrap! In fact, they sent our junior writer, Alex, straight back to her childhood when her mum would fill these with butter and vegemite for her lunchbox. Cute! To be honest, we love ‘em.

Helga’s Mixed Grain.

Admittedly, the first thing we noticed about these bad boys was the great, big size of them – they would definitely fill your tum for lunch. But when you read the ingredients list, turns out, you might be filling up on some not so nice stuff too… these are packed with vegetable fats, emulsifiers, thickeners, and dextrose. Even our online community coordinator, Eliza, wasn’t too impressed and said, “It’s nice that these are thicker and they won’t go soggy, but they’re pretty salty!”

La Tortilleria Corn Tortillas.

Low and behold, a gluten-free wrap! Okay, we have to admit while a tortilla might not really be a wrap, you can still fill it with some tasty toppers. We were shocked at the stellar ingredients list – it’s literally just corn and salt – and that goes hand-in-hand with the low sugar content of just 0.8g per 100g! The corn flavour is delicious, and we’d have to say the only downfall is that they’re fairly small (so you might have to pack two!). Our office manager Maddy said, “The fact that these wraps are free from preservatives and suitable for gluten-free people like me, as well as being delish, is an absolute win! They’ll be making their way into my weekly shopping basket.” If that’s not a great sales pitch, we don’t know what is!
