Written By Unknown on Tuesday 3 October 2017 | 12:00

When you indulge in too much sugar… how do you feel? Bloated? Hungry? Sick?

Although a few bites of that dark chocolate brownie might feel like heaven, if you soon find yourself feeling a little lacklustre, it could be a sign your body doesn’t tolerate the sweet stuff as well as you first thought.

You feel bloated.

While we all feel bloated from time to time, chronic bloating can be due to an imbalance of bacteria in the gut. And, when you eat too much sugar, bad bacteria can dominate. The remedy? Aside from easing back on the sweet stuff, boosting your intake of probiotic-rich foods such as kombucha, kefir and yoghurt, can help.

Your skin’s a mess.

Feel like you’re always breaking out? It could be those donuts. Put simply, sugar causes inflammation so when you’re skin resembles that of a hormonal teenager, it’s a pretty clear sign you need to ditch the sweet stuff. Instead, load up on leafy green veg and anti-inflammatory foods like turmeric, oily fish and avocado.

You’ve always got a headache.

Do you ever feel a head thumper come on after you’ve indulged in a few too many sweets? Well, rest assured you’re not alone. When we eat sugary foods, our blood sugar spikes and sometimes, this can lead to headaches and migraines as our body struggles to break down the excess sugars. While eating less sugar will surely help, if you’re addicted to the sweet stuff, you may suffer from withdrawal headaches during the first few days of going sugar-free too. The good news? Once you come out the other side, you’ll be bursting with energy and headache-free.
