Eat it to beat it: Headaches

Written By Unknown on Monday 2 October 2017 | 17:11

Eating the right foods can be key when battling even the worst aches and pains.

So, when that piercing headache strikes, try noshing on these foods to ease that throb.

Almonds.

Chronic migraine sufferers, this one’s for you! Studies show that people who have recurring migraines could be deficient in magnesium and, in fact, those who increased their magnesium intake were able to reduce the frequency of their headaches by nearly 42 per cent. Crunching on a handful of almonds can help relax muscle and nerve tightness to alleviate that pain.

Potatoes.

Bet you didn’t know those golden baked spuds had healing properties. Potatoes send the amino acid, tryptophan, flooding to your brain and increases the production of serotonin (AKA the “happy hormone”). While this may seem like a lengthy process, low levels of serotonin have been linked to recurring headaches and migraines, so boosting serotonin levels is a quick way to help ease or even prevent that headache.

Eggs.

This egg-cellent brekkie food could be the headache buster you’re after! Studies have found that vitamin B-2 (also called riboflavin) significantly reduces the frequency of headaches. Just two eggs will give you nearly 25 per cent of your daily intake, so whip up a batch of these Bacon + Eggs Cupcakes for an easy brekkie on the go. Top up the rest of your daily intake by munching on red meat and yoghurt!

Cucumber.

If your headache is caused by dehydration, it’s no secret you should reach for water first… but if that doesn’t hit the spot, try nibbling on cucumber. Snacking on foods with a high water content can help prevent dehydration headaches from getting you down. Cucumbers, lettuce and zucchini are more than 90 per cent water! Green smoothie anyone?
