How much sugar is in that… muesli?

Written By Unknown on Wednesday 27 September 2017 | 13:03

Surprisingly, muesli can be one of the worst sugary culprits!

We love to make a stash of our own Chocolate Coco-Nutty Granola to keep on hand for busy mornings. But, we know if you’re strapped for time and need to pick something up from the supermarket, choosing the right product can be super confusing.

Let’s take a peep inside five popular mueslis…

Woolworths Reduced Sugar Multigrain Cereal.

We tend to be wary of products that scream health claims on the box, so we were definitely cautious of the “reduced sugar” name. While Woolworths has jumped on the “low sugar” bandwagon, it still contains 10.5g of sugar per 100g, which is double the amount of sugar we would touch. Compared to some other store-bought mueslis, it is lower in sugar, but sweet stuff like sugar, maltodextrin and golden syrup still make an appearance on the ingredients list. As for taste, we didn’t even crunch down and we could feel the sugar in our mouths. Our online community coordinator, Eliza, said it reminded her of good ol’ Frosties, with some nuts and seeds thrown in for good measure. “It was way too sickly sweet, and seemed to contain more corn flakes than anything else.”

MixMyMuesli Hi Protein with roasted almond & walnuts.

MixMyMuesli has nothing to hide – with a super short ingredients list, all of which are recognisable, real foods (win!), and no dried fruit or sugar aliases. At 1.7g of sugar per 100g, this one comes in at the lowest sugar level of all! While we had high taste hopes due to its stellar nutritional info, unfortunately, we were let down. It’s pretty dry and bland (where are the spices to jazz it up?!), and if those nuts were roasted it was for a very short amount of time. All in all, not a bad choice if you’re looking for a low-sugar option, but in terms of flavour, it was a bit ho-hum.

Macro Aussie Muesli.

The first thing we noticed was raisins, raisins and more raisins. If it wasn’t for the dried fruit, the rest of the ingredients look to be okay – no preservatives, and no sugar (woo!). But it’s interesting how the dried fruit can really drive up the sugar content, as it comes in with the highest of all the mueslis we tested – a whopping 23.2g of sugar per 100g from raisins and currants alone. As for flavour, again this one was pretty dry and bland, no roasting, no toasting, no nothing… not to mention it was super sweet from all that fruit!

Be Natural Coco-nutty Granola Coconut Almond Spelt & Cinnamon.

So close, yet so far. This bowl of crunch contains brown rice syrup (which is the same as rice malt syrup), as well as no fruit or additives. But unfortunately, that’s where we ran out of positives. Ingredient number two is raw sugar, and sneaky vegetable oil is also hiding in there. Our office manager, Maddy, didn’t get the coconut-hit she was after and said the amount of sugar definitely put her off. But, perhaps the most baffling thing about this muesli was that they suggest serving it with coconut water (instead of milk). While coconut water is a nearly fructose-free beverage, we wouldn’t recommend pouring it over your cereal every morning.

I Quit Sugar: Gluten-Free Granola Coconut & Cinnamon Clusters.

As made by us, this product follows our IQS philosophies with a max of 5g of sugar per 100g and no dried fruit. In fact, it’s made from seeds, and gluten-free grains such as buckwheat and quinoa. Plus, leaving the oats out means this muesli has a great balance of macronutrients. We don’t want to seem biased, but when it came to flavour and nutrition, this one ticked all the boxes.
