Spice up your health!

Ditch the expensive superfoods and painkillers because the key to good health could be sitting in your spice rack!

It’s no secret that we love to add a sprinkle of spice to our recipes whenever possible, but the flavour-boosting benefits of spices are just one reason we love them so much. Did you know that you can beat some of the most common niggling health concerns with simple spices too?

Here’s how…

Beat inflammation with turmeric.

We’ve posted about this yellow super spice many (many!) times before. But it’s the active compound in turmeric, curcumin, which has a powerful anti-inflammatory action. Add freshly grated turmeric to your curries, sprinkle the dried spice into soups and smoothies or stir through porridge for a savoury twist on your fave brekkie.

Nix nausea with ginger.

Whether you enjoyed one too many red wines last night or the flu has you feeling like the world is swirling around you – reach for the ginger next time nausea hits! Its phenolic compounds (gingerols and shogaols) can help ease stomach upset and wipe out nausea. Make ginger tea by popping chunks of fresh ginger in hot water or grate into stir-frys, soups, curries or over roasted veg.

Punish period pain with fennel seeds.

Let’s be honest, there’s nothing worse than menstrual cramps and aside from the inconvenience, they can (at times) be utterly debilitating. But instead of reaching for the ibuprofen, next time try fennel seeds! With research showing that these super seeds can be as effective (if not more so) than over the counter meds, make your own fennel tea by crushing 1–2 teaspoons of seeds and mixing through hot water to kick those cramps to the curb!

Crush the common cold with garlic.

If you thought taking garlic to ward off the common cold was an old wives’ tale, then think again! Truth be told, garlic contains the powerful phytochemical, allicin, which boosts the immune system and allows us to not only fight off bugs at a faster rate, but research shows the severity of cold symptoms can also be reduced. Win, win!
