6 savoury swaps for sweet treats (that taste even better!)

Written By Unknown on Thursday 19 January 2017 | 20:34

This February, savoury is the new sweet.

Ever wondered what the big fuss is about quitting sugar? Now you can find out. We’re challenging anyone interested in the health benefits to trial the lifestyle for just one month.

You don’t even have to sign up to anything – simply follow the blog and the #SugarFreeFebruary community on Instagram for tips, recipes and support.

Reckon you could take up the challenge? Let’s start by turning all those sweet treats into satiating savoury feasts. You won’t even miss the sugar with these savoury swaps!

1. Pancakes.

Unlike some “sugar-free” diets, we don’t eat maple syrup while quitting sugar (and only occasionally afterwards). Even though it’s “natural” and contains some nutrients, the 40 per cent fructose content is a major concern.

So, instead of drowning your pancakes in the stuff, top yours with delicious poached eggs, smoked trout and chives. These ones even have Parmesan in the mix!

2. Scones.

We’re all familiar with scones that come with piles of sweeter-than-sweet jam alongside the clouds of cream. Mix it up for your next tea party with these pumpkin and parmesan scones.

Slather with cinnamon butter to satisfy sweet cravings – did you know cinnamon may help regulate blood sugar, too?

3. Waffles.

Many people eat waffles with salty bacon (or even fried chicken), so why not take it all the way? These buckwheat waffles may take a little longer than the frozen kind, but the combo of poached eggs, kale, smoked mackerel and thyme is all worth it.

4. Muffins.

Those sticky, bigger-than-your-head blueberry muffins are out of control. And you surely won’t want one when you have your own savoury pumpkin muffins with goat’s cheese “icing” and bacon “sprinkles”. Who said quitting sugar wouldn’t be fun?

5. Porridge.

Who else used to sprinkle brown sugar on their porridge until it melted into a decadent caramel?

If that sentence makes you drool, you’ll be happy to know that savoury porridge is just as good. Chicken broth, butter, garlic and shallots make for the ultimate warming breakfast.

6. Cookies.

Have you noticed that cookies are getting bigger and all the more stuffed with chocolate chips (chunks)? You might enjoy one as a decadent treat, but these cheesy cookies are healthy enough to for breakfast. They even taste just like our favourite café brekkie, corn fritters.
