- A new study says the UK sugar tax will prevent 95,000 childhood obesity cases each year.
- Children under 10 will benefit the most – with one in 10 cases of obesity stopped.
- The biggest impact of the tax would be reformulation… which has already started.
It looks like everyone has something to benefit from the sugar tax – apart from the soft drink companies, of course.
As well as impressive stats on childhood obesity, Oxford University scientists have also predicted the tax will result in:
- 144,000 fewer cases of general obesity a year;
- 19,000 fewer diagnoses of type 2 diabetes a year;
- and 270,000 fewer decayed teeth a year!
But it’s not just the cost of pop. As the pressure to fall under the tax threshold will force companies to reduce the sugar, the research shows reformulation will have the biggest impact on public health.
This is exactly what Sarah and IQS have been pushing for! With companies such as Pepsi and Kellogg’s already reformulating, the UK sugar tax is working before it’s even implemented. How much more proof does the Australian Government need before it acts?
What do you think will be the biggest impact of the sugar tax?
