The craziest health + foods trends happening right now (but are they actually any good?)

Written By Unknown on Wednesday 7 December 2016 | 16:56

The world of health and food trends is a fickle one. One day açaí bowls, chia pudding and kale chips are all the rage, the next thing you know, they’re passé!

As long as we’re eating whole, unprocessed food, we don’t pay too much mind to the latest fads. But there are few really eccentric ones that have caught our eye… and not always for the right reasons!

Rainbow everything.

The food in 2016 looked like something designed by Lisa Frank. We said hello to rainbow bagels, galaxy donuts, technicolour grilled cheese and unicorn toast.

Our verdict: We love anything with antioxidant-rich rainbow fruits and veggies, so unicorn toast is pretty awesome. But the use of food colouring is just plain wrong. Dyed mozzarella? Next!

Teatox.

Scroll through #teatox on Instagram and you’ll be struck by the amount of girls with washboard abs touting these products. Costing much more than a packet of Twinings, these teas may promise everything from weight loss to clear skin to “removing toxins”.

Our verdict: Some of the brands contain senna, a laxative that can cause serious cramping and diarrhoea. Is it really worth it for a slightly flatter stomach? Instead, supplement your diet with inexpensive herbal tea and enjoy the health benefits (without the awful side effects).

Fairy bread.

While fairy bread is nothing new to Aussies, a hilariously misjudged American article (which claimed we call it “fairy toast”, eat it for breakfast and even at weddings!) brought it back to the mainstream. It’s like our childhood birthday party all over again.

Our verdict: Seriously, America – we don’t eat this every day. Thank goodness.

We do like that butter-to-bread ratio, though. Just get rid of the sprinkles.

Frosé.

The so-called “drink of 2016”, frosé is rosé that has been semi-frozen in a slushie machine. Not to be outdone, one British company has created icy poles made of Champagne and prosecco.

Our verdict: Rosé, Champagne and prosecco are all a little too sugary for us – we’d save for very special occasions only.

Moon dust.

Believe it or not, not dust from the moon. Made by popular U.S. company Moon Juice, these formulas are created from “the most potent organic and wildcrafted herbs, adaptogenic plants, and bioactive minerals”. You can also try Brain Dust, Spirit Dust or Sex Dust.

Our verdict: Well, Gwyneth Paltrow is a fan. But we’ll just stick to eating whole, fresh foods that won’t cost us $709.75 a day, thanks!

Protein desserts.

For the health-conscious, protein desserts add an extra punch of nutrition to what is otherwise a treat food. So far, we’ve seen protein brownies, cakes, cookies, pancakes, waffles, ice-cream and more.

Our verdict: Protein slows the release of sugar to the system, but we can’t get on-board with the super-sugary protein desserts. So, we created our own!
