These days, the chances are we’ll be serving up someone with special dietary requirements at Christmas lunch. 

But that doesn’t been Christmas dinner needs to be boring! These eight alternative-to-turkey recipes will help you create a festive feast and cater your family Christmas menu for even the fussiest of eaters.

1. Your 13-year-old vegetarian cousin.

The scenario: 13-year-old Katie has just discovered boys, beauty products and where bacon comes from. Christmas ham is off the menu!

2. Your Paleo brother-in-law.

The scenario: Your sister’s hubby is getting back to his caveman roots (and we’re not just referring to his post-lunch refusal to help do the dishes!).

Aussie readers blessed with an abundance of fresh seafood during the silly season should take advantage of the stuff. Ask him to barbecue some prawns and he’ll be convinced he’s a lean, clean, Paleo machine.

3. Your Coeliac aunt.

The scenario: Aunt Gertrude is one of the founding members of the gluten-free set. Get ready for an hour-long rant if anyone refers to gluten-free as a trend!

You might want to try this hearty slow-cooked dish. It may be short on crumby-stuffing, it’s still a delicious option for those celebrating a cooler Christmas.

4. Your lactose-intolerant grandfather.

The scenario: Poor pop has just announced he can’t do dairy! Quick, hide the eggnog!

This dish is quick to whip up, pairs well with a few slices of roast and is so rich and creamy, Grandad won’t feel like he’s missing out on the main event.

5. Your fussy nieces and nephews.

The scenario: Uh-oh. Huey, Dewey and Louie refuse to join the table for Christmas lunch.

Bring lunch to them with this less-messy version of lamb roast. The minty yoghurt adds a festive flavour, and since these cutlets are so easy to eat, they won’t require you to tear kids away from their new presents – making them it’s practically tantrum-proof.

6. Your vegan best friend.

The scenario: Your bestie has given all meat byproducts the flick! But that doesn’t mean she should have nothing but roast veggies on the big day.

Just because she’s giving the meat-laden main a miss, doesn’t mean that protein is off the menu. This red and green themed pasta is sure to send her into a food coma as much as the next person.
