5 ways to improve every stage of your digestion

Written By Unknown on Thursday, 17 November 2016 | 21:02

Just so you know, this is a sponsored post. But the opinions are our own and we researched the topic and came to these conclusions independently.

From indigestion to constipation, many of us really struggle with digestive issues!

But what if we told you that the what you eat and how you eat it can actually improve digestion at every stage, from the tip of your tongue all the way down to your bowels? Let’s take a journey.

1. Chew your food.

It’s easy to forget to chew properly (especially when you’re so ravenous you could swallow a steak whole!). But chewing is important – it stimulates saliva production, which contains enzymes that help break down the starches in your food.

2. Stimulate stomach acid.

While indigestion and heartburn might suggest high stomach acid, experts now suspect these conditions could be caused by low stomach acid (as food isn’t being digested properly).

Fermented foods may help stimulate stomach acid secretion. Our mates at Remedy Kombucha hear that many people reduce their sluggish symptoms after drinking the fizzy fermented tea at mealtimes.

“We believe kombucha helps stimulate the stomach acid which breaks down food, making your digestive system more efficient,” says Sarah Condon, Remedy’s co-founder.

3. Love your liver.

Your liver is pretty vital to the whole digestion process. It clears out toxins, secretes bile to help you digest fat and is almost solely responsible for metabolising fructose (what a hero!). Which is why it’s so important to look after it.

Love your liver by eating a diet free from excess sugar, processed foods and alcohol. Bitter foods are also great for the liver, so try adding bitter greens, dandelion root and 85 per cent dark chocolate (yes) to your diet.

4. Look after your gut bugs.

Healthy gut bacteria has been linked to everything from reducing inflammation to positive mental health (as well as better digestion, of course). One of the most effective ways to promote a healthy microbiome is to eat probiotics. Yup, fermented foods again!

“The probiotics in fermented foods like kombucha help maintain healthy gut flora,” says Sarah. “A diverse gut flora strengthens the immune system which helps ward off bad bugs and makes you feel so much better.”

5. Keep things moving.

Constipation is seriously uncomfortable. So, it’s crucial that we eat enough fibre and starches to keep things moving along!

Prebiotic fibres add bulk to the stool and also promote the growth of good gut bacteria. If you’re really blocked up, try increasing your intake of resistant starch, found in cooked and cooled potatoes and green bananas (random, we know!).

What have you found has improved your digestion?
